Mill Dam Road on Otter Creek in Northern Vigo County

About This Location

Markle Mill Park consists of 8 acres. Hulman & Company quitclaim deeded the land to the county on July 27, 1999.
Markle Mill is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Only the dam and remnants of the 1816 Markle grist-sawmill foundation remain. According to history buffs, the mill was the longest operating gristmill east of the Mississippi River. It is believed to have been part of the underground railroad at one time but not a proven fact. The park has basically been left in its natural state. The waterfall over the dam, the sound of the flowing water, and other esthetic qualities of the park attract fishermen and history buffs. A gazebo with tables and benches gives visitors a place to sit and relax while visiting the park.
